Palestine is a conventional name, among others, for the geographic region in Western Asia between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, and various adjoining lands. Boundaries of the region were last defined in modern times by the Franco-British boundary agreement (1920) and the Transjordan memorandum of 16 September 1922. Today, the region comprises the State of Israel and the Palestinian territories. The region is bordered by Jordan to the East, Syria to the Northeast, Lebanon to the North, the Mediterranean Sea to the West and Egypt and the Red sea to the South. The number of UNRWA registered Palestine refugees by country or territory in January 2010 were as follows:

  • Gaza Strip 1,106,195
  • West Bank 778,993
  • Lebanon 425,640
  • Syria 472,109
  • Jordan 1,983,733
