Emergency Disaster Relief - Palestine Disaster Relief

Gaza's crisis continues to spiral out of control
NGOs on the ground are reporting a widespread humanitarian crisis as a result of the suspension of projects and the diminishing relief aid no longer being distributed in the region. Baitulmaal remains as a partner in the region working to help mitigate the effects of this crippling disaster.
The report released by Oxfam titled "Gaza Strip: A Humanitarian Implosion", says the blockade has dramatically worsened levels of poverty and unemployment, and has led to deterioration in education and health services. Find the full report here
.
Report Statistical Highlights
  • More than 85% of Palestinians in Gaza rely on humanitarian assistance, with UN food aid going to about 1.1 million people - three quarters of the population.
  • The number of families dependant on the Humanitarian relief agencies has increased tenfold since 1999.

  • Most private businesses have shut down and 95% of Gaza's industrial operations are suspended as a result of import and export restrictions. Unemployment is close to 80%.
  • Construction and agriculture have ground to a halt, 3,500 factories out of 3,900 have closed, causing 75,000 private sector job losses.

  • There is a 20% shortfall in electricity with implications for hospitals, sewage works, water supply and other public institutions.

  • Most of the population of the Gaza Strip do not receive running water at home because electricity is not available for pumping. About 30-40 million liters of sewage flows untreated into the sea every day.

  • 95% of the water in Gaza is not safe to drink.

  • Hospitals experience power cuts for 8-12 hours a day and depend on generators to run basic facilities, although there is a shortage of diesel. Spare parts for generators are almost impossible to obtain.
  • Access to lifesaving treatment outside Gaza has become more necessary, but in December 2007 only 64% of applicants were given permits to leave the strip by Israel, leading to dozens of patient deaths.
Baitulmaal's Response:
-As mentioned, since more than 85% of the people in Gaza rely on humanitarian assistance; In repsponse Baitulmaal has been dispatching truck loads of food supplies and rations distributed among the most needed families, widows and their orphans on a monthly basis.
-We have started this program since Ramadan 2009 with the cooperation of the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization in Amman, Jordan until October 2010. (see images)
-In addition we began directly purchasing goods and supplies from reliable and verified merchants in Gaza to encourage and help the economy in cooperation with the Unlimited Friends Society, a local legitimate non-profit / non-political oranization. (see images) More than 600 needy families (approximately than 4200 people) are receiving and benifiting from this noble program which is supported by the generous donors in USA and other countries.
-Ramadan Feed A Family Campaign and Orphan Iftar Events: Baitulmaal ramped up efforts in Ramadan to send food packages and host a party for the orphans in Gaza.
-Baitulmaal coordinated a shipment of medical supplies and two brand new fully equipped ambulances totaling $300,000.
What Can You Do?
A box of basic food supply is enough to feed a family of 7 for 2 weeks and cost $50.00
